Sun Kissed

After getting suggestions from readers on how to cope with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), I am at a beach house in the Florida Keys for Christmas--here is a picture I took, I was sitting in the beach chair you see but I decided to get some exercise and took a few pictures. Come to think of it, it was probably medically necessary to come to this beautiful island to treat my winter blues, I wonder if insurance will pay. (Just kidding, of course). I have never been to the beach at Christmas and it has been fun so far. The seafood house we just ate at had lobster and fish lights up for Christmas that were very festive and a lot of people were at the local stores getting gifts wrapped. Still, it is hard to imagine Christmas around the corner in 80 degree weather.

I have a bunch of reading that I took with me, including a book sent to me by the Penguin group entitled Sun Kissed, a romance novel they are pitching to women bloggers. You can only imagine how enthusiastic I am to read such a book, given my love for this particular genre. "She asked for nothing...but he would give her everything" reads the inside cover. Apparently, in this romance novel, there is a woman, a horse, an abusive ex-husband and a rugged, yet sensitive Natural man who saves the day. Yep, my kind of reading. My sister-in-law loves horses, and enjoys romance novels so I will pass it on to her. Anyway, back to the sun and ocean. I hope others are having a lovely holiday weekend. I'll be back later!

When I was 11, my dad was looking for oil offshore of Jamaica for a major oil company. He was struck there over the holidays and decided to bring the family (my mom, my two sisters, and me) there to be with him. We stayed in a rented house in Montego Bay, which at the time was just a fishing village. It was the most memorable and fun Christmas I can remember.

Anyway, when we got back it turned out that the oil company didn't pay for the family's travel expenses, almost $7,000, even though my dad's boss had told him that it would. That was in December 1969 when airfare was still truly expensive and $7,000 a whole helluva' lot of money. We lived on hamburger and canned beans for most of 1970, and I learned by my father's griping that it was unwise to rely on verbal agreements.

But as I said, it was our best Christmas ever, and although it never would have happened had my dad not been "tricked", in hindsight it was worth every penny.

So, for everyone out there with kids who thinks they can't afford a really special family vacation, do it anyway, at least once during their childhood. They will never forget it.

First, I don't know how Dr. Helen feels about profanity on her blog. Maybe she doesn't mind.

I find it distasteful, and a sign of sloppy and immature thinking. You are certainly free to disagree.

Do you go to your mother's house and say "fuck"? How about your boss' home? What about your girlfriend's parents' house?

It's not exactly rocket science that you moderate your own language to match the environment.

This is Dr. Helen's blog. It is like her home.

And you actually think YOU get to set the rules in HER house? She doesn't have to allow comments at all. Many people, ranging on all sides of the political divide, do NOT allow comments. This isn't because of "censoring" people, or fear of disagreement. It is that they don't want to read nastiness and bilge-talk (as opposed to reasoned disagreement), which all to often pushes aside the more polite posters.

Ace and Jeff Goldstein don't mind people saying "fuck" in their house. And that's fine. Their house, their rules. Maybe YOU don't mind people in your home talking like a drunken sailor in the place of honest argument.

But YOU don't get to make the rules for other people. I thought that Leftie types, so concerned about language about race, gender, and sexual preference, would understand that. But I guess that sensitivity changes when the target is someone you don't like.

It's a teenager argument that you should be able to say whatever you like, wherever you are. As a bank teller, you don't get to say "fuck" to customers. Ditto at ANY job where you deal with the public.

So don't blather on about free speech.

So if you cannot express yourself without insulting profanity, well, why not get your own blog and cuss away.

Frankly, I wish those people would do that, so that the other posters could actually discuss real issues.

Again, maybe Dr. Helen doesn't care about that kind of thing. But look again at how Dr. Helen disagrees with people, as opposed to "What makes you think anyone gives a fuck what you're doing for christmas?"

Yep, mighty classy, huh?

And why are they so jealous of Glenn's career success, professorship, etc? Perhaps if they aimed their energies in more positive directions, they could have greater success themselves. But they waste their time trying to tear down someone else. Oh, well.

Carefully selected and well chosen profanity is useful. It adds a level of emphasis normal language simply can't provide.

The danger of course is in its overuse by a writer or speaker. Then it loses all its declarative power and degenerates into just another word written/spoken by the language challenged ;->

One of the very finest and effective practitioners of profanity as an "art form" I've ever had the pleasure of working with is THIS GUY Ted Bream, when he was a 3rd line test manager at IBM in Boca.

Back in the mid-80's my office was right across from Ted's and I could hear everything that went on. The man was a master. If some lower level manager went in there trying to hose him down (Ted had a finely tuned BS detector), Ted would smoothly transition from affable fellow to desk pounding hellion swearing like a sailor.

As a psychological technique it worked very well. After a "Breaming", most would be duly chastened and bring him the straight scoop next time. It was very difficult to lie to the guy because he did his homework and had been in engineering test before becoming an IBM manager.

I find it distasteful, and a sign of sloppy and immature thinking.

I find it sloppy and immature thinking to judge form rather than content. There are bright people that swear. There are morons that never swear.

Do you go to your mother's house and say "fuck"? How about your boss' home? What about your girlfriend's parents' house?

I said in my comment that sometimes people had good reason to swear. Like when they're being insulted, assaulted, etc. So if one of those situations occurred - yeah, I just might use a bad word or two.

It's not exactly rocket science that you moderate your own language to match the environment.

I wasn't defending the poster's statement. I was criticizing the blanket statement that people who sometimes swear can't be nice or good or intelligent people.

This is Dr. Helen's blog. It is like her home.

No, it isn't. Unless Dr. Helen lets the general public look into her home and post public comments on it.

And you actually think YOU get to set the rules in HER house?

I didn't say that. And as I noted above her blog is not like her house. (And as an aside even people living in other people's house's have certain rights. Does your landlord get to steal from you, sexually victimize you, or sell you for medical experiments?)

She doesn't have to allow comments at all.

Yeah, and if she didn't she'd be a nimrod, because the comments and discussion are what drives traffic.

This isn't because of "censoring" people, or fear of disagreement. It is that they don't want to read nastiness and bilge-talk (as opposed to reasoned disagreement), which all to often pushes aside the more polite posters.

Riiigght. I've noticed that the times when my comments have been cut off in forums has usually been when I was getting somewhere with my argument, rather than when I was being insulting, etc.

It's a teenager argument that you should be able to say whatever you like, wherever you are.

No it isn't. But it is dependent on place. I can say whatever I want in the privacy of my own home or other private space.

As a bank teller, you don't get to say "fuck" to customers. Ditto at ANY job where you deal with the public.

It depends on the job. I've been in white collar jobs where it was common to tolerate language like this from customers - because they were lucrative customers.

And I'm not a Lefty. Now that's insulting.

Dear Anon 7:46:

Have you noticed your reply was the extremely adult equivalent of "it is too!"?

And yet you call people who disagree with you a "nimrod", once again demonstrating your poor reasoning skills and less than mature self-absorbed attitude. Puh-leeze.

The amusing part, to me, is that you defend a poster to this blog who was saying "fuck" not as part of an argument, but to be nasty and insulting only. And your response was, hey presto, there are some justifications for cussing away at people. Like the poster in question's right? Hardly. He was just being a nasty troll...and that has nothing to do with argumentation or debate.

As for saying "fuck" at various jobs, I recommend you start using the word around your boss. Often. And saying it around your parents. Often. In fact, I recommend you start saying it in church, the library, and in restaurants. Try saying it wherever you go, since it is justified and even smart people say it.

Be free.

But then don't be surprised that people find you rude and unpleasant company.

Obviously, there are times and places, which was my original point. And the poster who started all of this was being a nasty troll, using that language only to shock and upset, without any kind (again) argumentation or debate.

You keep avoiding my point that YOU don't get to make rules for OTHERS on OTHER PEOPLE's blogs. And your logical fallacy that my own argument means that a landlord has the right to "..steal from you, sexually victimize you, or sell you for medical experiments..." is just plain silly. And I think you know it.

Dr. Helen decided to "open her door" on this blog to commenters. That gives no one a "right" to be a jerk.

I think you know all this, and just like to argue. So get your own blog, and then enjoy the fun of moderating comments and making sure that things do not descend into a mess of subteenager insults and such.

And remember where all this discussion started, please.

Have you noticed that your replies consist of ad hominem attacks, which is the adult equivalent of "you're a poopyhead".

The amusing part, to me, is that you defend a poster to this blog who was saying "fuck" not as part of an argument, but to be nasty and insulting only. Wasn't defending him. Simply pointed out the fallacy of your blanket condemnation of anyone that swears.

As for saying "fuck" at various jobs, I recommend you start using the word around your boss. Often. And saying it around your parents. Often. In fact, I recommend you start saying it in church, the library, and in restaurants. Try saying it wherever you go, since it is justified and even smart people say it.

No, I'll say it under the circumstances where I feel it would be appropriate, like when I am being assaulted.

You keep avoiding my point that YOU don't get to make rules for OTHERS on OTHER PEOPLE's blogs.

I've never tried to make the rules for other people's blogs. They can write whatever they want, unless they're libeling, slandering, smearing, or defaming me. I was criticizing your blanket condemnation of people who swear, not Dr. Helen.

And your logical fallacy that my own argument means that a landlord has the right to "..steal from you, sexually victimize you, or sell you for medical experiments..." is just plain silly. And I think you know it.

It wasn't a fallacy. You implied that whatever someone says in their house, goes. Which is incorrect. Of course I also criticized you comparing houses and blogs in the first place as well.

Dr. Helen decided to "open her door" on this blog to commenters. That gives no one a "right" to be a jerk.

Dear 10:29---nice job changing the argument to suit yourself, much like the Monty Python Argument Room.

I originally posted this:

"Sure, I could be wrong, but people who fling the word "fuck" around generally aren't the nicest and best of people. Or perhaps you aren't the Anonymous in question. Even so, you were certainly being rude and insulting."

As is very clear, I was referring to the trollish and immature person who wrote:

Anon 2:09: "What makes you think anyone gives a fuck what you're doing for christmas? Bragging, is all I can make of it."

It was that person's use of the term "fuck" to which I was referring. But I think you know that, and were just being a smartaleck.

I added my own feelings about folks who fling about profanity incessantly, and you went off on a rant on how even decent people say "fuck" all the time, and how you have the right to say "fuck" on anyone's blog, or at any place you choose.

Or when appropriate.

Or whatever.

Tell you what: you stick with your friends and their ways of expressing themselves in such a fashion, and I'll stick with mine.

The person or persons who originally posted the nasty material (Anon 2:09, 3:16, and 3:59) don't deserve your energy. No troll (as opposed to reasoned argument) does---read their posts again.

Best of luck to you, regardless of how you choose to express yourself to others.

I am sure that your will help tremendously with the SAD thing. We are also planning on going to Napa wine country in late Jaunary and then to San Juan at the end of February for a week. My wife wants to run in the Worlds Greatest 10K and I want to drink rum punches. It is a match made in heaven.

Knowing that I have some sun and fun in my relatively near future makes winter ultimately bearable.

By the way, my wife says I have a L on my forehead. She says it is for Loser, but I like to think it's for libertarian.

Merry Christmas.

Joel

DrJ, I like the way you think.

I discovered that I love the islands in early December. I came back one year with some fun reggae Christmas music.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Dear Anon3:50:

That's true. But when you bait and switch arguments instead of responding to the original argument, and set up straw men...well, that's plain boring.

anonymous 12:38PM-

That's not what happened. From the beginning I stated that I was not defending the person using the F-word, but pointing out that the blanket statement "people who swear are unintelligent, bad, etc." was not true. "Anonymouse" brought in some arguments that were spurious, like blogs were the equivalent of people's houses, and I pointed out that they were spurious.

Okay, enough of this nonsense, though It does bring more money to Dr. Helen (which I think is great).

You keep shuckling and jiving. The first anonymous poster was being a jerk, and while you do not defend him, I notice that you don't condemn his juvenile behavior. I'm betting it really was you, anyway.

Regardless, I think that you are the anonymous person responsible for three separate digs at Dr. Smith---first that she is enjoying herself, second that her husband has tenure (Anon 3:16, Anon 3:59), and third that she should be giving money to charity (Anon 4:58).

This shows you are just a troll.

I doubt you have given much to charity, but who know if you would tell the truth. The comments you made about Dr. Reynolds are despicable and untrue (as I am sure you know, which is one reason I suspect you are the original poster).

It doesn't matter. It is just a sick game you play, trying to rile people up and playing word games.

You go ahead and defend people saying "fuck" during discourse with others all you want. As I said before, you hang out with your kind of people. You are welcome to them...and yes, there are all kinds of cool people who curse all the time. Except when they don't. And so on.

You are right out of Monty Python's "Argument Room," and missing the point entirely. Which is fine.

I'm the only person really responding to your nonsense and I am done. The other posters are clearly much smarter than I am for not engaging you.

You are just an insulting little troll, and you give nothing to this discussion of substance. Neither am I, arguing with you, but again, at least Dr. Helen will make a few bucks. Hopefully enough to buy a drink or something!

Enough.

No, as an adult I just ignored it. Sometimes people say unpleasant things, most adults realize that.

Regardless, I think that you are the anonymous person responsible for three separate digs at Dr. Smith---first that she is enjoying herself, second that her husband has tenure (Anon 3:16, Anon 3:59), and third that she should be giving money to charity (Anon 4:58).

Wrong again. I didn't make those posts. I'm not familiar with Dr. Helen's husband so I could care less one way or the other. I've heard him on a couple of podcasts, but that's it.

I doubt you have given much to charity, but who know if you would tell the truth. The comments you made about Dr. Reynolds are despicable and untrue (as I am sure you know, which is one reason I suspect you are the original poster).

It's really none of your business what my means are, or whether or not I give to charity.

You are just an insulting little troll, and you give nothing to this discussion of substance.

It's pretty ironic that you disparage other people's maturity, adulthood, etc. in every other paragraph - because almost all the other paragraphs contain childish ad hominem attacks. I think that's called projection in the jargon of the mental health field.

I think "Dr."Helen and the InstaLump were tourist characters in one of Hiassen's better books. Heh!

I don't read a whole lot of romance anymore. I've pretty much grown bored with it. But, Catherine Anderson is one author who's books I buy and read the second they come out.sportsbook There've been a few other authors in the past (Judith McNaught, Linda Howard, and Julie Garwood) who I've been loyal to and then ultimately they have changed their style to appeal to a more mainstream audience, and lost what was special about their books that kept me reading.
