Another Blogfest

Last night, Glenn and I attended another blogfest for Tennessee bloggers at Calhoun's. The turnout was smaller than the last one, but the bloggers in attendence were an interesting bunch and a couple of new people showed up whom I had not met before. I joined Glenn in talking with gunblogger, Tam, who has a terrific blog at View From the Porch blog and her friend, who is a gunsmith. Most of the discussion centered around zombies and shotguns as well as various strategies for dealing with school shooters. The gunsmith had a good strategy to avoid a mass shooting, don't go to universities where you can't carry. Fine for some folks, but not all of us can avoid them. My thoughts: shouldn't a "free society" that allows the mentally ill and others--even criminals--to attend colleges without constraints (or at most, a form asking the student to vouch for whether they have a criminal or disciplinary record--yeah, criminals etc. generally answer truthfully) also allow others to freely protect themselves or be liable for injuries if they do not?

It was a fun evening and as always, I learned a little bit more about my fellow bloggers, their personality quirks (in a good way, of course!) and their individual interests in blogging.

Dermestid beetle larvae are used in museums to remove the flesh from the dead. It might be worth trying them on the undead.

Guns are very useful for short-term emergencies, but if the problem is ongoing, we should try using a sustainable organic means of pest control.

Probably work best if we drop some larvae into the coffin. Take care of the bodies before the voodoo priest even has a chance to raise them as zombies.

OFF TOPIC:
Hey Dr Helen,

This is Monty Loree from http://www.canadian-money-advisor.ca

I am currently conducting a MONEY POLL on my site and am contacting respected bloggers in their fields.

The question I am asking is:
"What is your best financial decision in the last 5 years"

The purpose of the poll is to generate good money tips ideas for my blog readers. I've decided to contact non personal finance bloggers to get a larger variety of experiences and ideas.

I know that your readers might be interested in this type of question as well.

I would really appreciate your participation.

If you're able to get involved please visit:

Dr. Helen, would you ask that law professor you know if the above qualifies for the Tennessee statue dealing with justifiable homicide?

I'd even lend you my Mossberg 590 that I used to foreign climes. It waits patiently on my side of the king sized bed.

James Griffin,

Surely it would qualify... I hate spam. I have two unusable email addresses that are flooded with over 20,000 messages--probably almost all spam. It is really frustrating.

dr. ellen - HA! Love it!

Maybe what we really need to do is ask ourselves "Why do the zombies hate us?" Only by addressing the root causes of radical zombieness can we establish a meaningful dialog between ourselves and living dead.

Sorry, I mean " metabolically quiescent individuals who have chosen non-mainstream postmortem lifestyles."

'Careful there, Dr. Helen, or someone might accuse you of hostility or bias. [You racist!]

Speaking of spam, Dr. Helen, I can't sign in under my Blogger account on your site. I keep getting told my password is "incorrect". So I have to go to another site which will allow me to create a Goggle account, then create the same account with the same password I already have both on Blogger and now Goggle - each time. Then when I go back to your site, I'm signed it.

This might be impeding anyone trying to comment on your site. And I wonder if there is also something Google gets from having me create an account there each and every time I want to comment here.

I'm going to have to do it right now...........

Just got back from Althouse, where I had to "sign up" with Google once again, which has obviously finally allowed me to post this comment.

J. Peden,

Could it have to do with the New Blogger? I have noticed more trouble when trying to comment on blogger in general. Are other bloggers having this problem?

Regarding VT, I think that if the local government finds it appropriate to ban individuals from defending themselves, then the local law enforcement MUST step up to the point of preventing massacres before they happen (an obvious impossibility.)

I heard someone on tv defend the delayed actions by many of the VT Police by saying, "hey, these guys have wives and kids to go home to."

If that's the case, then I say, either give individuals the right to defend themselves, or fire ALL law enforcement officials who aren't willing to put their lives before those who are prevented from defending themselves.

I'm getting sick of pundits who are still willing to write off 32 lives in the continuous attempt to protect the masses from "potential" conceal and carry mishaps.

Yes.

Was that your veiled plaintive argument for LESS gun control here in the wild, wild west?

H-girl, google what Australia did after their version of a Virginia Tech slaughter episode ten years ago.

Banned all semi-automatic guns.

Result?

No more Columbines, no more V-Tech tragedies.

Obviously, lower profits for gun manufacturers.

Which side are YOU on, dear?

Only ten years? These are rare events. They should be much rarer in Oz given the smaller population.

Other effects of the gun ban: Flooding had crocodiles getting closer to people who fended them off with cricket bats. You'll get my cricket bat when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

Taking your smug and smarmy snark to the wrong side of Sydney might get you shot by a hoon with one of the many illegal weapons on the streets.

How will this make Australia safer when the next mass murderer wipes out a swath of defenseless human beings, who will have no recourse, because the police are 15 minutes behind?

If the argument for gun control is so logical and obvious, why the need for the snide ad hominem attack/reference to being on the gun manufacturer's side?
