Interview with Doug Feith on "War and Decision"

Doug Feith, the undersecretary from 2001-2005 has a new book, War and Decision: Inside the Pentagon at the Dawn of the War on Terrorism. With the 2008 campaign underway, we're hearing more and more about 2002 and 2003 and the decision to go to war in Iraq. But most of the public discussion misses the true story. We talk with Feith about what really happened, and what he sees as the biggest issues for the next president.

The book is detailed, yet easy enough for a layperson to read and understand. It is written in plain English and without abbreviations or the expectation that one knows much about history or politics. I found it an intriguing look at how and why the current administration made its decisions with documents and facts that support the conclusions.

That's funny - I had this book in hand last night at B&N and was going to buy it, then contemplated the wall of other Current Affairs books on the wall...and started thinking why should I read this guy's story and not that guy's etc. Buncha books out there with everyone's spin.

My head spun around and I walked out with nothing.

It is nice to see a different perspective at the time when the media is devouring the McClellan book.

I agree. Funny thing is, whenever McClellan is on TV, he's saying he still has affection for President Bush, that he believed what he was saying when he said it, and that he's an honest man. The media never reports that part.

On the other hand, if Bush believed what he told the American people when he told it to them, it makes me wonder where the big lie is.

Exactly.

Everyone believed what Bush believed when the decision had to be made. What many people don't realize, or can't accept, is that government officials have to make the best decision they can with the information they have available at the time the decision has to be made.

Unfortunately, sometimes the info turns out to be wrong.

True and leaders are held accountable for acting on wrong information. That's one of the downsides of being a leader, you're head is on the block for your decisions. All of them.

A large part of being a leader is assembling a competent staff and organizing that staff into an efficient and accurate apparatus. If it delivers incorrect information the blame is on the leader.

As I recall, Bush announced in 2004(during an election year, no less) that the intelligence was wrong, and said his choice at the time was the act on the information or take the word of a madman. And he was reelected because I think most understood at the time that he acted on what we all believed to be true.
