Ask Dr.Helen Column

My PJM column is up:

As if it's not bad enough to be laid off, men often get criticized for being upset and depressed by it.

The column is an extension of the post I wrote the other day about men being "addicted to success."

You can read it here.

You nailed it, Dr. Helen. Replace the phrase "addicted to success" with "biologically driven to thrive and survive" and the fact that men become depressed upon losing their jobs becomes much less perjorative.

We are the result life on earth after 4.5 billion years of ice ages, meteor strikes and cosmic ray bombardments. The fact that some men have fire in their bellies is not an addiction, it is the core fact of human survival. Darwin would understand.

From high school I went into the Air Force and wouldn't you know they had a man power reduction and I was unable to reinlist, would you call that lay off? I would, and every job I ever had after that I have been laid off from, and they were not just lay off's the buildings closed down. I had to reinvent myself 5 times and because of this I have nothing, I have not been able to save dime all thses years and now that I am in my late 40's I fear for my future. But I'm sure I'm not alone. This is what happens when american companies sell us down the river. And do you know what I've been told by these companies before they let you go? I am so sick of it, they say "It's nothing peronal It's just buisness". What a crock! It's throwing us under the bus that's what it is. The big guys don't suffer like us. The last time I was laid off I just got this sick feeling in the bottom of my stomach as I said to myself "not again". Nobody sticks up for main street. And with the ecconomic crisis we face with jobs being a big part of the problem. I just don't see how Obama's spending package is going to help us Americans when the jobs created by it are going to go to the illeagals and again we American's are going to take a back seat. Our government must know that if they are to create jobs for americans they must first limit the H1-B visa's and close the borders. But it doesn't look like anybody in the government is going to do that doesn it?

Don't know if Darwin would understand, or I'm designed to feel this way, but production is in my blood, and I enjoy the challenge. In this economy, the CFO just gave me a 6 month repreive. I have to think it's the enterprise I bring to the department, but then again I'm in a "department". It's all so confusing that I constantly feel like I'm flying by the seat of my pants.

So now we are to attack Indiana Jones for letting himself get dragged under that truck, rather than let the Nazis just drive off to Cairo with the Ark of the Covenant.

I'm going to have to retract something I said when I linked to this post of yours, something horribly politically incorrect, something bound to offend the sensibilities of many. I said the world was powered by a finely tuned engine that worked by teetering men on the edge of a trash can...not quite discarding us altogether, but not quite making up its mind to keep us. I said some eighty percent of the things we have, we acquire by means of threatening men.

I regret the error. I apologize for any offense that I caused.

In hindsight, I recognize that ninety-three percent seems like a much closer approximation.

As always, excellent work Dr. H.

My brother sent me a book some time back with the title, "Uncoupling", which was a study of the socialogical occurences that happen when a couple begins to break apart, and follows that through the separation. What I found intriguing was his comment that changing a job had the exact feelings that were described by the book. I'm understanding that book with his interpretation to say that losing a job, for a man, is closer to the feelings of a divorce.

As more and more of us lose our jobs, see our life savings disappear - up in smoke and our lives becoming irrelevant, you will begin to see some of us get pissed off.

Society uses us for punching bags, look at your nightly advertisements. The man is always portrayed as a bumbler or an idiot. All the cards are stacked for the woman and kids.

Personally, I am going to work a job long enough to get the money to 'tune in, turn on, & drop out'. As soon as I have the cash to do it, I am buying the acreage and building the house with greenhouse. Then I am going to quit trying to be productive in a society that does not seem to value my efforts.
