The "alpha male" role is not dying, despite what some stupid actress says.
People want to escape from reality, so the harried employee at an accounting firm wants to have a couple of hours of escapism clinging to the outside of flying planes and shooting off weapons as freely as he wants. And his simplistic girlfriend wants to cream her pants about a "real man" who isn't just holding down a responsible job.
It's all fantasy, but it's not going away.

I really get sick of these "alpha male" discussions, though.
Here's an interesting aspect: Women bring this subject up, criticize men, evaluate men and select men based on their "alpha male" or "real man" qualities, but they don't realize the hypocrisy they are engaging in.
An example is a 25-year-old woman who lives at home and works as a cashier. She makes fun of the 24-year-old man who is an assistant manager and has his own apartment.
You would think that it is ridiculous that a person who doesn't have as much is making fun of another person. But that's not how women think. They picture their dream guy, and compare him to the men in the proximity.
On the one hand, there is a strong cry for women to be treated "equally". On the other hand, there is a strong internal mechanism in women to only give any bit of respect to some man who has achieved far more than her. That's really how it works.
Kind of stupid, actually, but it's just life.

I doubt it considering I saw "The Expendables" at the theater last weekend and "Machete" was one of the trailers.
I think the alpha-male role is as in demand as ever amongst the viewers, it's more the Hollywood culture that doesn't understand it (other than a hackneyed stereotype of the real thing, which nobody wants to watch), and so they dismiss or even denigrate it. It'll return to prominence just as soon as a major studio finds some writers who can consistently portray it in shades of reality.
Then, the trolls of the world, hitherto lacking in such real-world role models, will at least have fictional ones to lead them out of adolescence; clearly, from reading someone's comments above, it's needed.
(Oh, and for those who prefer to judge the messenger rather than the message, color me gamma.)

I think the expert is so focused on what Hollywood is doing that she doesn't notice it itself is dying. The more the economy tanks and even if women are maintained in jobs as one last hurrah for feminism, extra money in general will be gone and those women who support their own destruction and the supporters of it such as Hollywood will have no time to go watch.
I am sure there are metrosexuals and others male types who still dig being dumped by moviemakers. But the guys I know, real men, simply tuned Hollywood out long ago.

Quick anecdote, re: "Alpha Males". In my somewhat recent past, worked for a major aerospace company, worked directly with the test pilots. No "betas" or "gammas" there; extremely smart guys too - I'd bet money that many of them outscored the "geeks" on the SAT. Chief Test Pilot is a short, stocky, just-past-middle-aged man (love him dearly), and at first flight, a news reporter asks him about his atypical physical demeanor. Pilot quips: "I don't want to be Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise wants to be me."
I'll assume the movie studios will make whatever type of movie that will earn them money. They seem very dollar conscious.

As society gets even less blue collar, people identify less with masculine screen characters, but we need to look at historicity and realize that all of our classic action heroes are getting old. There's a reason they just starred in a film that tagged them as "expendable."
The "geek" has risen in film pretty much due to the talents of one man - Judd Apatow - and the characters he creates. I have a feeling it's already on the wane though, as his style has been copied enough to saturate the market. Will Ferrell has unique talents to play his overwrought quirky characters, much like Adam Sandler made several films as the same passive-aggressive simpleton.
That people identify with these characters is incidental - the film rank and file laughs at them, which is enough to sell the tickets and DVDs.
This actress is also confusing "alpha" with "action hero." The latter is (typically) a subset of the former. Those Ocean's 11 guys weren't Rambo but they were plenty alpha. People still like to see strong men on screen.
Film goes in cycles. In the 70's we saw conflicted, broken characters like Jack Nicholson in a world that didn't make sense. This recalled the film noir era and guys like Bogey. Then in the 80's we got action blockbusters like Die Hard and Terminator (alongside the John Hughes/Chris Columbus-style comedies about middle-class white guys.) Then in the 90's we got more socially-focused films where heroes were conflicted or otherwise complicated moldbreakers again (Titanic, MI, Philadelphia, Austin Powers).

I'm in this camp. I think I've been to ten movies in the last five years. Probably half of them were wastes of money or at least could have waited for a DVD. Going to the movies is expensive, and my time is more valuable than the $11 I shell out, and you have to deal with cellphones, people talking, funny smells, etc (Bring back ushers to shame people into silence!) I don't even consider buying food and drink there.

One would think this is true, but Hollywood makes shi**y movies all the time, and often bets totally wrong on what will bring in box office receipts. They are also relatively clueless as to how to flatter middle America's sensibilities. They made that ridiculous "Stop Loss" movie, an ideologically-driven screed based on a mendacious impression of the stop-loss concept, and used it as a vehicle to criticize the Iraq war. Guess what? It tanked big time! The studio's reaction? "Well, people just aren't ready for straight talk on the war." Pffff.
Almost every anti-war film made during the Iraq War era flopped, and they never learned (except possibly with "The Hurt Locker") that a lot of America supported the war and didn't want to be shamed with a crude heartstrings movie. My point is that Hollywood may be money conscious, but they live in an ideological echo chamber that clouds their thinking not just about making money but about making good movies.
Just RTFA...these experts are mixed up like a bowl of nuts.
Toy Story and Twilight are cited as
Toy Story has as central characters a gold-hearted cowboy and a macho space ranger.
Twilight is quite simply about a girl's yearning for a hot guy.
These are examples that macho men are on the outs in Hollywood?

I have to give the author credit for speaking the truth here:

I'm surprised a mainstream entertainment article puts this in plain view - without question, the strip-mining of maleness from the family structure has had a destructive effect on boys. God help us when the next generation becomes adults.
I, for one, stopped consuming most of what Hollywood put out years ago. I watch a drama or suspense movie here and there, but by and large, I have no more desire to watch almost anything coming out in theaters these days. I'm definitely not one of the morons who actually thought that any of those movies that are listed above were "good" movies (and I definitely didn't pay to go to see any of them).
That's not to say that I don't watch movies, though. I've found that foreign films, especially out of China, are becoming better and better. Movie-makers from developing countries - where masculinity is, whether rightly or wrongly or sadly in its effect, still revered - have this tendency, in my opinion, to spend more time developing characters, and certainly seem to pay more attention to developing more-appealing male characters (they definitely aren't a bunch of sniveling bitches who can't do anything right to save their lives). I don't know if it's because the studios in those countries haven't yet figured out that they can make more money if they dumb-down the movies so that they'll appeal more to shallow, moronic, ADHD-having Americans who wouldn't know good acting to save their lives or because they actually care about the quality of their movies, but they are definitely, in my opinion, much better than almost anything coming out of the US these days.
The director of the Honk Kong movie Ip Man, for example, succeeded in combining good action scenes with good character development and a good plot, something that few American action movie directors have done (you, Missred, may think Armageddon was a great movie, but I'd be willing to bet that there are plenty of people out there who actually care about the quality of what they're watching who thought that the movie was terrible for many good reasons (sure, it had great special effects and a star-studded cast - including a blubbering Ben Affleck - and is, if you're looking for cheap thrills, fun to watch, but the character development sucked about as much as the plot did (which is true of just about all disaster movies made in America))).

But looking back at all those nigh-on 30 years of service, I recollect a number of other such events.....iron girders of an M4T6 bridge in the middle of a snow storm, jeeps going into ditches on exercises, APCs operated by run-amog guardsmen, etc. ,etc., etc.
Looking back on all of it over some fine scotch and cigars while sitting by the fire-pit on this VERY FIRST Autumn-like day, it's nice of you to remind me just how exhilarating Life can be.....should you survive it.....

During Desert Storm, John Leo wrote an excellent essay on warriors in U.S. News and World Report. Unfortunately, I've never been able to find the essay in the Internet. In the essay, Leo points out the warriors greater appreciation of life because he's seen it snuffed out and risked his own.
Maybe that's a big reason the WWII generation took on the world so aggressively and enthusiastically.

When I was a young lieutenant in the 82d, I pulled SDO at the brigade HQ.
On one occasion, as I was making my way through the headquarters on my initial run-through, I came upon the brigade XO, a Nam vet. He took something of a 'moment' in his life to sit me down and have a 'father-son' talk about his 'exhilarating' experiences.
In that he explained how he had scrimped and saved all his life. Until he (1) went to Nam and (2) got shot and (3) almost died. While recovering he realized that all that money he'd saved would be 'wasted', had he died of his wounds.
I took that lesson to heart. Especially after the parachute malfunction on an EDRE....shortly thereafter.
Of course, one of the quintessential aspects of living Life to the fullest is a degree of confidence. The confidence that comes in Christ....

I agree with Cham and think the "new" Chuck is kind of funny. Chuck is a blowhard, so it's kind of biting him on the butt.
As to your libel accusation: Somehow I don't think that a jury will ever be seated in this monumental case. Someone is mocking Chuck, and it is amusing.
Maybe Chuck will learn from this, but probably not.

I like some of the "alpha male" movies. One of my favorite movies was Terminator (1984).
But there is also an issue of distinguishing fantasy from real life. The boys who want to play the role in real life - especially if they are purely playing a role and not even backing it up by anything all that special - are kind of idiotic. And embarrassing.
I'll still go see most anything with Clint Eastwood in it. The older he gets the better he gets. Stoic doesn't mean you don't have feelings, just that you don't flaunt them.
OK, once was funny. But the fake Chuck should have the common decency to make his fakeness apparent.
Meanwhile....mmmm....Mathilda May. Makes "LifeForce" watchable. At least while she's on-screen. And naked. Which is a lot.
And y'all sound like old people. Which, I guess, you are (if judged against teenagers, anyway). Yeah, there's tons of shovel-ready movies. But then, there always have been.
Michelle Rodriguez is used to playing Alpha (fe?)Males. And is alleged to be bisexual. If she's in a movie, the guy who was more Alpha than she would have to be, like, a -- well, he'd have to be a John Wayne to her Maureen O'Hara.
And that just isn't done.
So, in that sense, she's right. She tends to fill the Alpha Male role, and a suitably aggressive male -- one that could tame her, as they used to say in the Dark Ages of the '40s and '50s -- would simply be impossible to get out of committee, I suspect.

I suppose I could have expanded upon that - how sad it is that we never seem to really leave Junior High.
