"Fifty-eight percent (58%) do not think a good work ethic will pay off,..."

This is from a poll at Rasmussen:

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only 26% of Adults believe it’s still possible for just about anyone in America to work hard and get rich. That’s the lowest level measured since regular tracking on the question began in January of last year, down from 33% at that time. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Fifty-eight percent (58%) do not think a good work ethic will pay off, while 16% more are not sure.

However, a plurality of all Americans (46%) still feel it’s possible for anyone in the United States to work their way out of poverty.

And if you do get "rich," that is, make over whatever amount the government sets as "rich" such as $200,000 or $250,000, more of it is confiscated by the government (unless you are Warren Buffet and make your money in capital gains), so what's the point? Learned helplessness at its best or worst or whatever.

income tax is oppressive, and it teaches people to be strongly helpless.

there are people out there with guns threatening us with death if we don`t comply.

sure, we need to fund government for energy, roads, education etc. but come on, we get taxed to death on income, services, consumer products..not to mention fees for civic services that are creeping up.

i helped a friend clean a restaurant carpet the other night and he gave me $100 for 2 hours work, which i appreciated. while we were there a man showed up to clean the grease extractor fans above the stoves.

i asked my friend how much he thought the man billed for that job.

he said the restaurant has to get the work done twice a year by law, and it costs $1100 each time it`s done.

the man is one of only three people in the area that does this work and he does at least two restaurants per night.

the grease is bordering on rancid and has to be scraped off manually and with a heat gun in places, and the job takes about three hours to complete.

so, in that instance, with hard work and a steel stomach, that man will be well off.

and i know that he gets paid cash for that particular job, because i`ve known the owners of that restaurant since i was a kid and he told me.

After years in the business world I can tell you all about who gets ahead working for corporate America.

In flush economic times the employees that catapult quickly to the top are tall white men with nice teeth. They choose to enthusiastically accompany any boss to the golf course, bar, poker table and titty emporium at any time of the day, night and weekend. It also helps if they misrepresent their accomplishments, embellish their resumes and all-out lie to everyone all the time.

However, in times of a less-than-robust economy, the employees that avoid being laid off are those that work hard, stay beneath the radar, are on good terms with the their coworkers and customers and quietly do what they are told. However, the don't count on any riches, they aren't on that trajectory.

You can pick whichever avenue you wish.

In modern America, the winners are picked not self-made. Americans measure accomplishment by laud.

This is true at the top, where the government eliminates competitive threats to big business darlings. It is true in those darling companies, where middle management systematically eliminates any threat from hard-working people below. It is true at the bottom, where women are pre-selected as winners in hiring and firing. At all levels, winners are picked.

So, why try? Why work hard? Work just enough. Do anything else and you're just being exploited.

LOL! Of course not. The legal fraternity will steal everything a man has if they get the slightest wiff of an 'excuse'. Do I need to remind your readers that the proceeds of my 26 years of labour (after performing excellently at school) was EUR12,000? Take away 'legal fees' and is was MINUS EUR40,000. THAT is where 'a good work ethic' will get you nowadays in the world of perjurous women and criminal family courts. That's why I tell young men 'get your money out of your country before your country gets you money out of you'. All men should take their money OUT of the local banks and put it elsewhere or turn it into other valuables that can then be defended from the criminal legal profession in the FC.

I think that a good work ethic has intrensic value. It feels so good to accomplish something. Learning and earning feed our self-esteem too. I think the point is sometimes the experience of work is good in and of itself.

Now I better get my coffee and get to work!

Just by the way. When I first started working in 1982 it was quite clear to me that the women were 'quota woman' and that they would not be held accountable for the work they didn't do while being paid the same as us men.

In my 28 years in the work force I have direct experience of women refusing to do the jobs they are paid to do with 1000s of personal examples, right down to the nurse who refused to feed me when I was strapped to my bed in a hospital. Men who don't do their jobs are roundly criticised by their fellow men.

The 'new generation' of men have seen this and they quite openly express the opinion women in the workplace are parasites on the men and they quite openly express the opinion there is 'no point working hard' because it will not be rewarded. They happen to be correct.

The competitive hard work ethic has been destroyed by women because they act as parasites in the workplace and in the FC. They have only themselves to blame for the collapse of the marriage rates and the mass refusal of men to have children. Just look at Germany. Lowest birth rate in the western world. Men do 'just enough' to get by mostly and the women are bitching up a storm about being 'forced' to work. The primary men who work hard now are the indian men. My workload has gone from 2000-2500 hours a year to 300 hours a year post divorce. I can live on 300 hours work a year. I do MUCH more as my work is pretty easy. But if it took me 26 years of HARD work to make MINUS EUR40K as a married man and it takes me 300 hours to make EUR30K post divorce? I know which marital status I will recommend to young men.

@Dr. Alistair
"income tax is oppressive"
Then learn how to lawfully not pay it, like I did.

I think we need better definitions for what it means for hard work to "pay off".

For our grandparents who were touched by the Depression, in order for hard work to "pay off" that just meant putting food on the table, a (likely less than 1500 square foot) roof over their head, a car in the garage, and perhaps a color television.

Now you can achieve all those things and still be considered to be below the poverty line in this country.

I'm sure it's true that hard work doesn't pay off like it used to (and hard work doesn't mean what it useed to either... it's more likely to leave you with a headache at the end of the day than a sore back), but perhaps it is also true that our expectations for what hard work is worth are out of whack with reality.

Getting rich is an entirely different subject, but less important to me since it isn't necessary that everyone be able to get rich in order for our economy to work.

I disagree, Cham. My career arc (from entry level tech support type guy, to sales, to management, to running my own business) has existed mostly during flush times (the last 15 years) and had a lot more to do with my ability to make money and improve efficiency for the people I was working for, combined with my willingness to leave if they didn't pay me better/offer me promotions/give me resources. I've never taken a client to a titty bar, and will do just about anything to avoid playing golf, including telling the boss that I appreciate the invitation but I have other things to do.

I think that's a formula that can work in good times or bad times, but it's a lot harder to pull off when times are tough.

globalman,

We've had different experiences with women in the workplace. The best manager I ever had was a woman. I learned more about business and recieved more support trying to sway upper management from her than any of the male bosses I ever had, who were quite often more concerned with trying to chase the skirts of the hotter women in the office than actually focusing on their jobs.

In the cases where women played the gender card to get ahead (in one case a lady was sleeping w/ the manager and getting advantages over the rest of us as a result) when the inequities came to public light, people lost their jobs, so I can't really complain about the oucome.

As for women not doing their jobs, I just haven't seen that as an issue in the way you describe. In the places I've worked, if you didn't do your job you didn't make much money, or else you got canned. True for women and for men.

In Australia a woman who worked for one of the car hire companies was caught red handed stealing money. She was fired. The guvment insisted she was re-instated because 'she was not told that if she was caught stealing money she would be fired'. The entire country had to go through a process of telling EVERY employee that if you were convicted of a ciminal offense against your employer/ee you were liable to be fired.
Oh. Did I mention that recently a woman killed a man, cut him into pieces, and distributed his body around the countryside clearly indicating that she knew she had committed a crime. The AG of NSW declared that 'because she was abused there was no chance of a conviction' and she was not even charged with an offence. Where murder is condoned you think women are working in the workplace? Many men report the same as me in the corporate world. And don't even start talking about 'guvment jobs'. PS. How many years you been in the workforce and how many jobs? I have worked for more than 200 companies in 20 countries on 5 continets. I have NEVER seen women pulling their weight. EVER.

You women look at the 1% of men at the top and in your stupidity you project it onto ALL men and then you demand 'equality' to that. Go work in a coal mine and see how you like THAT kind of equality. Regarding globalman, I just find it interesting that he's had so many jobs and can't think of a single woman he's ever worked with who he'd consider a good worker. Eric,
I am not your 'average guy'. I started travelling for work in 86 for IBM. To give you an idea? In 89, at 25, I was the youngest system architect for IBM Australia, ever, with 12 staff on a 400 work month project to be implemented in 20 countries. By 1990 I was invited by NASA to come and design a new way for the 800 IBM software developers to maintain source code for the International Space Station. What man of 26 would not be flattered to be asked to come to NASA to 'help out'? By the early 90s I was advising some of the largest companies in Australia on systems design as well as helping out all around the IBM world. I had become 'slightly famous' and I really hated it. I had thought I would like it. But everyone wanted a 'piece of me'. I just had my first baby and I wanted a peaceful life. I changed tack to an 'emerging technology area' in 91. Somewhere I would be 'in demand but obscure'.
Since 91 I have been consulting to major corporations. This includes doing the business development for companies like IBM, Hitachi, PriceWatherhouse among others in this emerging technology in the 90s. I used to travel so much I once had a balance of 500,000 points (kms) on my qantas ff card. A week without an aeroplane was a blessed relief.
Since 2000 I based myself out of Ireland and consulted to global multi-nationals developing my own software and selling it in partnership with colleagues. You know the names of many of my clients. Over the last 8 years I have written software that will totally revolutionise my very narrow area of business. So you know what companies I have seen. Hundreds of them. My colleagues have seen hundreds more. We are the 'top of the tree' in our profession. When IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, HP, Accenture et al fail? We get the call to 'fix up this mess'. You get the idea of the companies I have worked for?

Again. I have NEVER seen women pull their weight in the workplace. Sure, a small minority do. Men don't tolerate men not pulling their weight but we are forced to tolerate women because it's 'sexual harassment' to say a woman is not doing the job she is paid to do.

In the UK recently a nurse refused to give a dying man a drink of water. When he tried to call his wife to come and help him the nurse took his phone off him. He died the next day. I am disgusted that women will not denounce such behavior as reprehensible. My grandmothers would have.

Eric,
"I just find it interesting that he's had so many jobs and can't think of a single woman he's ever worked with who he'd consider a good worker."
I didn't say 'not one'. I have met THREE women who performed towards the higher level of men. Women, on average, perform FAR below men across the corporate world where 'strength' makes no difference at all.
The reason women are blissfully absent from software development is that the quality of the product is not disputable. You can tell when software is crap. When the quality of the product is measurable and not disputable? Women are totally absent. Like I said. Blissfully so. This is why women don't make good sales reps. The results are not disputable. This is why HR is infested with women. The results are NOT measurable.

In my school and professional life not one woman has even attempted to compete with me. Not even attempted. Why would I call them 'equal'? On the other hand. Many men have competed with me and some of them have whipped my 'intellectual arse'. I am delighted to say that the most brilliant man in the world in my profession is a close friend of mine. I LOVE working among men who are intellectual giants. The group of men I came to work with in Ireland in 2000 were the undisputed world leaders and such a group has never been assembled again.

By the way? These intellectual giants? None of them are so stupid as to suggest they can make a baby. Women used to be quite happy to accept the massive privileges of being a woman merely for making babies for the men. Now they are not happy doing that? They are miserable and neurotic in the main. Henry Makow has talked a lot about this.

Working hard in the corporate world does not pay off for men because women undermine this. This is why I don't work with women in my software development. Indeed, a colleague left today. His reason? He simply can't stand working with the women any more.

Look at Cham. She insults the likes of you and me saying 'playing golf with the boss' is the way to be successful as a man. Yet? When someone calls her statement blatantly stupid her immediate response is to 'appeal to the authority figure' in this case being the blog owner. Now? Translate that to the work environment and how useful would Cham be? Like an ashtry on a motorbike.

Another example? In my early days at IBM I was on the 'install team' for our software. The job of the 'install team' was to implement whatever the software was into an IBM country in an 8 week project. In that 8 weeks you were EXPECTED to work 9am-11pm or so every day. No question. We were not allowed access on weekends. It was a VERY high pressure job with MASSIVE exposure to management. Success assured career progress. When I used to interview men for the job I would tell them: "You will have to work around 70 hours per week on install whether you are sick or not. And you WILL be sick. Don't take the job if you are not prepared to put the effort in. You will not be able to hide failure. Failure will be bad for your career."

No woman asked to even be interviewed. Not one. They did hire a woman from IBM HK to try and get a 'quota woman' onto the team but she resigned inside 8 weeks and we didn't get the head count back. We were disgusted at her resignation. There were 16+ men on this team across three products. Working hard used to matter. You would get promoted and pay rises based on performance in the 80s in major corporates. Not any more.

Sometimes male chivalry simply blocks things out.

This is true of some men: A woman can hit a man, or even break a bottle over his head, and if you ask him (a while after the wounds heal) if there has ever been domestic violence in his relationship, he will say "No". And he will really believe it.

He will really believe it, and he simply will not "see" in his mind that a woman hit him. It sounds bizarre, but I have seen that go on with some men.

Similarly, while Globalman100 is over the top, as mentioned above, he is saying some politically incorrect things that could be examined more closely.

Do women produce the same as men in things like software or hardware development? Not in my experience. That's not saying all, that's just saying not to the same level with regard to lots of women, and maybe if you take off your blinders you can see.

Women are given more chivalry on the job, and they always have Escape Plan B (just "retire" and get a sap to support them).

Something to mull over:

Patents are an area where you either produce or you don't.

I know that there are stories about a few inventions by women (although I understand that a woman did not solely invent Kevlar, as touted, she was in a group of people that developed it), but take a look at who is getting the patents. You see lots of Hanses and Mr. Takamuras and James and Williams and Gottfrieds and Richards. You don't see lots of Marys and Jills and Kathis.

I think it's something like 90-95 percent, maybe higher for heavy technology patents.

And the argument can't be made, although Eric may try, that women aren't producing patents today because they are oppressed.

Lots of women are majoring in engineering, they have been for a couple of decades, but my experience is that a few really stay in it, the rest wander over to public relations or something like that.

"Similarly, while Globalman100 is over the top, as mentioned above, he is saying some politically incorrect things that could be examined more closely."
It is interesting to me how the truth can be described as 'over the top'. Can you explain to me how the truth can be 'over the top'? I don't understand how that can be.

Why? 'Over the top' is a phrase coined out of WW I when MEN went 'over the top' of the trench to almost certain death. They would be shot for 'cowardice' if they did not. (Note. NO 'EQUAL' WOMEN WENT OVER THE TOP.) And in many cases the only role for the MAN was to run forward until he was machine gunned to death. Women were PERFECTLY CAPABLE of doing this. How can testimony from personal experience and clearly marked opinion about that possibly be compared to 'going over the top of a trench to almost certain death'?

'Political correctness' was a mind control device injected by the PTB into communist Russia. It is intended to get the 'sheeple to police themselves' by having the 'sheeple' report 'politically incorrect speech' so the 'defective sheeple' could be given the benefit of the 'guvment mental health service' to 'correct his/her dysfunction'. 'Political correctness' is a necessary item in a totalitarian communist state. And that is what we all live in whether you know it or not.

I denounce and rebut anything that is true as possibly being 'incorrect', politically or otherwise. I would encourage all men and honorary men(the good women ;-)) to denounce calling things that are TRUE as 'politically incorrect'. Anyone with a brain should be denouncing 'political correctness'. And pretty much all those who have brains do! That is why it is so rare to see political correctness condemned as a mind control device and rebutted with the truth.

Your rhetoric skills are terrible. You bring your points across in a way that will turn most people off - if they are not simply looking at the content and thinking about it, and not reacting to the way you post.

And not everything you say is the pure, unblemished truth. If you believe that, you also have ego problems in addition to your problem with presenting issues.

Tether,
something else to mull over regarding our 'oppressed' women. Men figured that if there was ANYTHING that women must know more about than men it must be having babies. I can see the 'logic' in that. No man ever had a baby. So women were left to be the EXCLUSIVE midwives for thousands of years. And we all know how much women bitch and moan about how they were 'oppressed' by the baby making role and how 'so many women died in child birth'.

Well some MAN takes a sneak peek into all this, notices that a lot of deaths are because the women can't push the baby out and HE invents forceps. Men invented tongs the day after the first man burned his hand on a hot stone from the newly discovered FIRE. LOL!! In the following 10,000 years women, being exclusive midwives, were systematically oppressed by being forcibly blindfolded every time they went near a man with tongs to make sure that she wouldn't get the idea into her head to innovate the tongs to forceps and save the lives of all those women and children. Go do your reading. The literature is FULL of this evil patriachy oppressing the women to make sure they didn't invent forceps. ;-) (Ok. my humour is bad)

The point is. Men were circumnagivating the globe while women had not innovated the tongs, one of the oldest tools known to man, very likely older than the wheel, into forceps to save the lives of 'the women and children'. I have asked women to explain to me their claim to 'equality of intelligence' when they could not invent forceps in that situation. I'm still waiting. If women can't invent forceps to save their own lives? You really think they are going to invent anything useful in any significant number! LOL!! Excuse me while I pick myself up off the floor laughing. Women can't innovate. Their brain simply is not capable of it any more than our abdomens are capable of producing babies. I don't claim 'equality' in the baby making stakes because it's laughable. Women claiming 'equality' in the intelligence stakes or working stakes is JUST AS LAUGHABLE. And us men SHOULD laugh at such claims.

Not at all, I don't deny that men seem to be more inherently gifted with the kinds of skills that would lead one to patent an invention. But that says nothing about work ethic and overall ability to "pull one's weight" in the workplace. Also, that's just one skill set. Many an inventor would make for a horrible manager, and many are the engineer types who couldn't organize or promote their products out of a wet paper sack.

This is a VERY revealing statement. I am NOT here to persuade people to a point of view. That would be a complete waste of time. I dropped by because it seemed like a few people here might be interested in knowing the truth.
I give a toss about people waking up to the truth and coming to terms with the facts of the matter then freeing themselves. And one way to do that is to present personal testimony. I just did 8 months over at the spearhead. You know what? They aren't interested in the truth over there. They are interested in complaining about being slaves while demanding to be slaves. Go take a look at my posts there.
I gave the guys there the 'keys to the cell door'. Guess what? Only three decided to free themselves. The rest decided to be slaves. As Aldus Huxley said 'people can be made to love their servitude'.
Um...have you ever heard of income taxes and mortgages? Both are unlawful under common law and do not need to be paid. But people 'love their servitude' so they pay them and work for 40 hours a week, 48 weeks a year, for 45 years in large part to 'pay' their 'income taxes and mortgages'. It's slavery. But not many men want to know that. Is this a 'point of view'? Nope. They are facts. Mortgages were first declared unlawful in the US in 1968 in the Credit River decision. How many of you know that? (http://www.homeownersjustice.com/credit-river-court-decision.php)

Over at the Irish Free Man site? With 2000+ members now, 200+ being women? I am still awaiting any man or woman to make a serious effort to rebutt what I have said in my more than 2000 posts. I'm not going to put 2,000 posts here. I have better things to do. You can all read the Irish Free Man site. But if people like Helen, Topfer, Elanor etc would like to actually learn the truth of what is happening in the world, and the remedy that applies to the US? Well. That would be useful TO THEM. And here is the important bit Tether. Whether people here bother to follow my links and learn the truth? It makes no difference at all to me. This is a genuinely charitable service I am offering simply because Helen is one of the few decent western women I 'know' and it is a good idea for me to promote such women because I'd like to see more of them. By knowing Helen you have been presented with the key to your cell door. You can thank her later.

Also? Look at Elanor. She took the article I posted here from SMH and made an excellent article for the spearhead based on that. That's a small and valuable contribution I made by bringing that article to Elanors attention.

Please don't miss this comment:
"This decision, which is legally sound, has the effect of declaring all private mortgages on real and personal property, and all U.S. and State bonds held by the Federal Reserve, National and State Banks to be null and VOID. This amounts to an emancipation of this nation from personal, national and State debt purportedly owed to this banking system."

How many of you actually understand what that really says? Here's a tip. Your 'national debt' is a fraud. ;-). Is THAT fact worth knowing?

You might want to check out the history of the color television. Not available during the Great Depression.

Eric, if I didn't know better from your extensive resume posted here, I would have guessed that you work in the Human Resources Department.

If you have ever seen the TV Series "The Office", you remind me of Toby.

You are proud of mediocrity and proud of stuff that normal humans do. If you have a wife, you brag about it how wonderful it is. If she leaves you some day, it will be the biggest drama that hit mankind since the beginning of consciousness.

You're born, you die. I happen to think that rubbing people's face in what you can lord over them (money or whatever) is bad enough, but lording mediocrity over people who may have more than you is ... just plain weird.

Coming from someone who sounds an awful lot like Dwight Schrute, I can take that criticism with a chuckle.

"There's another toll, and a telling one: A majority of the respondents — 52 percent — say relations between men and women are not "fine" these days. Just 13 percent, in fact, strongly agreed that the sexes are in harmony."

I think a mix of Cham is correct. I've known so many useless people who are promoted because they put in the most facetime or kiss the most butt

Where I work, marrying the owner's butt ugly and bitchy daughter brought a blatant Peter Principal scenario into being. But he's paying dearly for it now. And at least she hasn't been working there for a few years.

When a politician speaks of taxing the rich, the average gullible voter defines "rich" as someone who makes significantly more money than that voter does.

bless you globalman, you walked through the fire and kept going.

when men post comments about the issues they have with women socially and politically the are told that they are over the top.

for me, your statements ring true, and it is interesting that some who would respond would rather take the ad hominem approach than to discuss the issues you present.

it is clear to those without agenda that industry is men`s domain and that of the household is that of the woman, but to say that around women and pinkshirts sets off the type of thinly-vieled attacks seen here.

until such time as a man can gestate this will remain to be true.

and by the way, i`m fully aware of the issues regarding mortgages and income tax and the highway traffic act, but will not discuss these issues on public forums.

and as you know, www.henrymakow.com

my personal thoughts on the divide between men and women is that it`s a maunfactured one, one of commerce and greed...and a multi-pronged attack on the family.

Thank you. Indeed. I have proven that it is possible to rescind your consent to be goverened and deny the jurisdiction of the court. I video recorded my 'court meeting' and I have recently published it to the web. Apparently the PTB are not happy that video from inside the australian federal magistrates court has been put on you-tube! Along with the transcript! LOL!

This comment is being made several days after the post, so I doubt anyone will read it. Since the post echoes something I have been thinking for awhile, I'll make the comment anyhow.

Where I work, it is all women except myself. It is a library, so this is not unusual. What I've found is that it does not matter if you only call in sick once or twice a year rather than three or four days a month. It does not matter that I've accumulated more vacation time than everyone else combined because I don't take time off. It doesn't matter if I do work that is not necessarily required by my job. It does not even matter that other people's work gets assigned to me, since I'm the one who will actually get it done.

None of this matters at all. None of it counts for spit, come evaluation time. I get exactly the same raise as the women who call in sick about once a week, who take all their vacation time and who take extra unpaid time off. I get the same raise as those who spend most of their time in the gossip cabal, rather than being where the are supposed to be doing what they are supposed to be doing.

It just does not matter.

Capn,
I hear you my friend. When I started working in 82 it was exactly the same. I went to work for IBM in 86 and they actually paid for performance until about 94. After that? Forget it. I went to work for other big multinationals then on a commission basis and that helped but taxes sucked the life out of any advantage. Eventually I just freaking gave up in the 'corporate world' and went private. Since then? A LOT of my money has come from fixing up jobs women stuff up. I really like women. But not when they are stuffing things up.

My father used to work in a nearby steel strapping shop. Safety was their number one priority there. I remember he used to take home some of his safety goggles and gloves which I also played when I was a kid. I pretended as him, as a big man doing steel banding seals to big signage and metal pillars.
He’s the best man I know, a man of ethics, of respect and goodwill. And I really miss him.

Wow. Helen, you started quite a conversation here.
Here are some simple statements I think I can defend as true:
--It's almost impossible to achieve and succeed without working hard.
--However, working hard is less and less a sure way to success.
--Subcultures formerly known as exhibiting a good work ethic are now known for disability certificates and Oxycontin.
--Working hard is likely to generate income, but direct taxes and indirect effects of government legislation, regulation, litigation, and taxation punish all efforts to grow wealth.
--Do anything or own anything and you become a target of government and its main constituency, the plundering class.
--An entire class, enabled by government, slothfully plunders the fruits of hard work by others.

I'd like to be positive about the merits of hard work but just after the drop-dead income tax filing deadline of October 15, it's hard to be optimistic. However, I do hope Michelle enjoyed her "Let them eat cake" visit to Spain.
